African Environmental Development

Company Registration Number: CK98 70435/23, Vat Registration Number: 4220185013

Company Profile

Who We Are

African Environmental Development is a relatively small, but specialist company, concentrating on environmental management, environmental monitoring, environmental engineering and solving of environmental challenges for its clients.

Who Our Clients Are

Our clients are mainly mines, industries that may have an impact on the environment and local authorities, although we have done specialist projects for a much wider clientele, including work for State Departments.

Company Background

With the ever-increasing awareness of the environment and the interaction the environment has with both people and the business and industrial sector, it became apparent that many businesses or local authorities could no longer provide these services to the extent and thoroughness that the authorities required from them. Furthermore, an ever-increasing number of companies doing business with, or providing services to clients in the North American and European countries are required to conform to the ISO 14001 international environmental management standard. Understandably, taken into account that environmental management is, in most cases, not their core business, not all businesses can necessarily afford to, or wish to employ all the environmental management personnel required in today’s business world.

African Environmental Development, based in the Gauteng Province of South Africa, was therefore formed to assist such companies, mines and local authorities that do not wish to employ environmental specialists on a full-time basis, by providing these services on their behalf. In these cases, African Environmental Development will assist by either providing a comprehensive environmental management service, or, alternatively, providing one or more single services relating to environmental management.

African Environmental Development was formed during 1998 and forms part of a much larger network of environmental management and engineering specialists, covering aspects from the physical environment including geology, geohydrology, soils and water to the natural environment, including fauna, flora and ecological systems in general as well as civil and mechanical aspects such as the determination of flood lines and the design of culverts, bridges and dams. In short, African Environmental Development will provide solutions to whatever environmental challenges you may encounter.

Initially, African Environmental Development focussed mainly on water treatment and water related aspects of the environment, as well as on the development of environmental management software. Our environmental management software is still regarded as being unsurpassed, as we develop industry-specific environmental management modelling programmes. Although we are still considered as a leading water specialist firm among our peers, the fact that water interacts so extensively with everything else in the natural and human environment, have prompted us to branch out into all other environmental management fields. We have, therefore, progressed into related environmental management fields and can now offer a comprehensive environmental management service covering all aspects relating to the environment.

African Environmental Development originated out of the mining industry in South Africa, with gold, platinum coal and base-metals mining accounting for a large part of our background. African Environmental Development was, in fact, born out of the mining industry. As the ore bodies, which have been mined for well over a century, slowly become depleted, the gold mining industries in Gauteng, Northwest Province and the Free State are gradually winding their operations down leaving many environmental challenges behind and placing a high demand on our services. The format of the mining industry is also undergoing a metamorphosis. While the traditional large mining corporations are becoming less involved in mining, the smaller-scale, more cost-effective, mines are beginning to replace these on land, previously mined and developed by the larger corporations. This places a very specific, and often, a highly complicated, environmental management responsibility on these new-generation mines. African Environmental Development has ample experience in these types of matters to assist these companies.

What We Can Deliver

African Environmental Development can provide the following services to its clients. Adequately qualified specialists will perform all the services listed here below, ensuring legal compliance in all respects of the products we deliver:

Where To Find Us

African Environmental Development (AED) is instantaneously accessible from anywhere in the world via our website, http://www.aed.co.za/. This is probably the quickest way to access information on AED for anyone who wishes to learn more about our company.

Our physical address is Portion 129 of the farm Sterkfontein 173 IQ, Mogale City, Gauteng, South Africa. This is also where we make everything happen! This is located within the Cradle Of Humankind World Heritage Site, rather appropriate for and environmental management company and is little more than a stone’s throw from the world-famous Sterkfontein Caves. Although this address sounds like a mouth full, it is rather simple to find us. The schematic drawing hereunder shows you how to find us from most of the main routes within the Witwatersrand…

  • Program named SlimesDamBalance, calculates a water and salt balance for a mine tailings dam. This program was specifically developed to quantify the amount of water and salt entering the groundwater environment. Prior to the development of this program, groundwater pollution was much more of an estimate.

  • Program named SARSolv. Developed to automate the calculation of the Sodium Adsorption Ratio of irrigation water.

  • An automated database-linked program named CMI-GHD was developed for the Consolidated Metallurgical Industries mine, Purity Chrome, Rustenburg, to manipulate the database for their Geohydrological Data and to provide the client with a user-friendly interface.

Environmental Management:

  • AED manages all environmental aspects of the Luipaardsvlei Estates Ltd mine on behalf of their owners, Mogale Gold. In fact, AED manages most of Mogale Gold’s environmental matters as well. This includes the EMPR for their operations.

  • A suitable portion of land was identified, based on environmental and groundwater aspects, and purchased on behalf of the Mogale City Local Municipality for the use as a cemetery.

  • Environmental Management Programme for the Blaauwbank Mine in Magaliesburg, the oldest gold mine in the Witwatersrand area and still operating! This EMPR is somewhat unique as the mine, although being fully operational, is also run as a gold mining museum where tourists can mine and pan for gold themselves. Even more interesting is the fact that these tourists may then legally purchase the visible gold they have panned! As it is located alongside the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, was aptly named the Cradle of Gold Mining.

  • Environmental Management Programme (EMPR) for the Grootfontein Gold Mine near Nigel.

  • Environmental Management Programme for the Mineral Developments Mine near Krugersdorp.

  • AED provided a specialist report on the impact the mine had on the wetland downstream from the Sandtoria Sand mine in the Krokodilspruit catchment north of Pretoria.

General Environment Related and Environmental Health Services:

  • AED conducted a Title Deed Search of the entire South Africa to identify all properties where the Consolidated African Mines Group either owned surface rights or where they are the mineral rights holder. An assets register was developed from the results of this project.
  • AED conducted a legal compliance audit and risk assessment for the Mogale City Local Municipality where all properties owned by the Local Authority, or where they owned mineral rights, were located and evaluated based on the environmental risk these properties pose for the Local Authority relating to mining activities.
  • AED developed a structure, which included job descriptions and departmental descriptions, for an Environmental Health Services Department for the Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited: Randfontein Operations.

Some of our clients have requested that the work done on their behalf by African Environmental Development be kept out of the above list. For this reason, the list is not complete.
